Senator Ron Wyden Public Appearance with Local Candidates
Friday October 3 at 12:30 Senator Ron Wyden will be at Willamette University together with U.S. House Candidate Kurt Schrader, Oregon State Senator and candidate for Treasurer, Ben Westlund and State Rep. Candidate Richard Riggs.
Senator Wyden and the others will be speaking out in praise and encouragement of the great voter registration efforts that have been happening in Oregon. Tens of thousands of new voters have registered in the last year; several counties now have an unprecedented Democratic majority of voters and others, including Polk county, have come within a narrow margin of just a few hundred.
Senator Wyden and company will be at the Hatfield Library on the Willamette campus today at 12:30 pm. Democrats and interested supporters are encouraged to attend this event and bring along a friend.

Marion Dem's Progressive Film Series Marion County Democrats are sponsoring a showing of Michael Moore's new documentary, "Slacker Uprising". It will be shown, Saturday, October 4th at 7:00 (doors open at 6:30) at the Grand Theater, 191 High St NE (across from the courthouse- just south of Court St) It documents Moore's 62 city tour during the 2004 presidential election and the impact of the emerging youth vote. With Barack Obama acting as a catalyst, the 2008 election is likely to bring that movement that began four years ago to fruition, revealing the true scope and power of that voting demographic. In keeping with the theme of the film, those 22 years of age and under are admitted free; $3 for everyone else. |

We have a legislator with some rhythm and rhyme -
Brown for House - go - get you a sign,
(says) Brown for House!
Brown for House - he's the farmer's friend
Brown for House - he'll understand
Brown for House - how much we love this land!
(it's) Brown for House!
Change is coming, and the time has come;
We need solutions that serve everyone.
The voice of the valley to a seat in the house,
(it's) Brown for House!
Brown for House - Let's get a living wage!
Brown for House - Turn the page
Brown for House - to a golden age
(with) Brown for House!
It doesn't matter what the pundits claim,
Big or small, we still need the same:
Better government - that's the name of the game
(with) Brown for House!
Brown for House - cause he's all right!
Forward is better than left or right:
Working together, win the fight
(with) Brown for House!
(yes!!) Brown for House!

History. History. History. History.
It's been eighty years since traders were last out on the ledge,
Just eight years of slashed regs has pushed them to the edge,
Eight years of greedmeisters doing what they will
With Adam Smith's "invisible hand in the till."Only months ago it was "make hay while the sun shines" --
Don't worry 'bout the housing bubble, ARMs, or risky subprimes.
Bush practically guaranteed endless good times.
(Ask not for whom the closing bell chimes.)The country's in crisis! Better call out Jack Bauer!
Or we could give Henry Paulson unlimited power.
Or we could gather as one and give one mighty shout,
"Fix it yourselves! No taxpayer bailout!!!Rob Breyer

Latest numbers, POLK COUNTY Only, October 2, 2008:
Democrats: 15,331 --- Republicans: 16,416
We have increased by 2,342 since the beginning of the year. Republicans have increased by 90. Lots of work accomplished out there, with registration booths at all the many fairs.
The voting totals from the May 20 primary were very favorable.
Here they are: (totaled up from the Polk County official Precincts Primary Report,
at http://www.co.polk.or.us/tempimages/EL30.HTM)REGISTERED VOTERS - TOTAL ..... 39525
BALLOTS CAST - TOTAL ..... 23662
BALLOTS CAST - DEMOCRAT ..... 11227
BALLOTS CAST - REPUBLICAN ..... 9743
BALLOTS CAST - NONPARTISAN ..... 2692Perhaps the favorable margin was due to the more competitive primary
races on the Democratic side... and consider this: of the 11227
Democrats who cast ballots, 3855 did not vote for a State
Representative. There are 3 things we can do right now:1) Educate voters, especially new Democratic voters, about the
importance of being informed on LOCAL elections and voting down the
ballot.
2) Canvass for the candidates, both national and local, here in Polk County3) Find PCP's for Independence and Dallas - and be Active as a PCPPick one of these, and do it now!
Monmouth Peace Vigils - every Wednesday 5-6 pm
News from the Anti-War / Impeach Bush weekly demonstration
As of Sept. 9, the Peace Vigil has been there every week for sixteen
months. They've decided to keep on doing it, at least for now. The drive-by demonstration and Peace Vigil
continues every Wednesday, 5-6 pm, at Main Street Park in Monmouth
continues. It is a cheerful event. If you can't join us on the curb, drive by and be sure to honk or wave as you pass -- we appreciate it!
![]()
March 19: About half the folks who turned up for the vigil marking the 5th anniversary of the invasion of Iraq. July 16: Add to those above about 141 carloads of passers who honked or waved positively (and 2 negatives)
Running Box Score:
Wed Jul 16 - 141 positive cars, 2 negatives
Wed Jul 23 - 148 positive cars, 1 negative
Wed Jul 30 - 121 positive cars (@ 200 people) Zero negatives
Wed Aug 6 - 161 positive cars, (@250 people), Zero negatives
Wed Aug 27 - 156 1/2* positive cars, 3 1/2* negative
* An unusual car count - a driver honked, smiled, and waved broadly - while his passenger made a thumbs-down gesture.Wed Sept 3 - 135 positive cars, 7 negative - This is the most negative results we ever got. Because of the GOP convention & the Queen of Pork bounce?
Wed Sep 10 - 205 positive cars, (@ 300 people), Zero negatives - Is that bounce over already? - definitely over half of all the cars that passed, and there were quite a few nice smiles we didn't count.Wed Oct 1 - terrific! 235 positive responses (that's cars, nearly 400 people), 2 negative - over half of all the cars that passed waved or honked, and that includes the many people on cell phones and the just plain confused.
& a big thank you to Rick's Place, across the street, for the gifts of ice water for all the vigilers.(Note: Our Rep. Darlene Hooley seemed to think that the feelings for
impeachment and withdrawal from Iraq were some kind of elitism, despite
repeated appeals from PolkDem leadership and unified meetings with
PolkDem and all other county chairs from her district. But these numbers
are from the grassroots.)
Old News & Repeats (some slightly amended)
this year: Highlights included Sen. Obama's visit to Salem in February,
where they worked with the crowd waiting outside the armory, a booth at
every Polk County festival, and "Polk County Day" at the Oregon
Democrats' booth at the state fair. We'd like to know how many we have
registered: in the hundreds, but don't know the exact figure. Here are
a few photos from the state fair, with some of the stalwart
registrators (is that a word?):

SOME REPEATS OR OLD NEWS:
Polk Democrats had a booth for Voter Registration and Information, on Main Street at the Park in Independence, open from 10 am to midnight, Friday through Sunday.
Our voter registration teams wearing blue visor caps labelled REGISTER HERE went through the crowd with blank forms and pens. We registered 73 new voters.
We wish we had brought a camera to record the mother helping her daughter register for the first time, on the 4th of July: they both looked so beatific. Gloria Holland made a touching registration on the 5th, when she recruited a young Latina who had never registered because she thought it would cost money.
Richard Riggs walked the length of the parade accompanied by a large contingent of marchers wearing Riggs for House T-shirts.
Alan Holland drove a truck for the Polk Democrats, directly in front of Jason Brown’s float. Jason's truck played a new "Brown for House!"campaign song the entire distance. (Jason didn't so much march as run circles around his float the entire distance, passing out candy on both sides of the street!)
Jason's truck and song were also in the Sheridan parade July 5, to lots of applause. To hear the song, poke here: "Brown for House!" (return via back buttons)
In the three days at Independence, 25 Democrats helped with shifts at the booth and/or in the crowd. Jackie Pierce, for example, did yeoman work; after six hours of registration outreach on the 4th she minded the booth Sunday for the toughest segment, the Christian Rock shift. We also sold many buttons and bumperstickers.
